Stanford Interactive Workspaces![]() Work led by Terry Winograd in the Stanford Interactive Workspaces project focuses on extending interaction mechanisms to augmented environments. The extra complexity of these multi-person, multi-device settings creates a new space of disturbances as devices come and go, crash and restart, and communicate. We find that successful integration in an interactive workspace puts several key constraints on design: (1) No-futz setup, configuration and administration, so the physical and electronic elements can change without interrupting the environment, (2) Uniform "overface" mechanisms for operations (such as moving information) across devices and platforms with common mechanisms and metaphors, and (3) Interfaces for social activities (such as brainstorming) that enable fluent use without disrupting the flow of conversation and activity.
