Instant Messaging Guide

With instant messenging you can conveniently tell who of your friends is online and chat with them. We use instant messenging as a backup channel running in parallel to the videoconference.

Software

• Extended List of Jabber Clients (multiple platforms)
• AOL Instant Messenger (multiple platforms)
• Miranda (Windows, multiple networks)

Jabber is a protocol we should keep an eye on for the future. It's a fully open sourced protocol which would also allow us to setup our own server. Mac OS X Server (which is the software that this Wiki server runs on already) will include a Jabber server in it's next version, scheduled for release in the beginning of 2005. It will be easy then to set up our own IM server. (Stefan)

Also Jabber can be run over a secure (encrypted) connection. (Jonathan)
