Jim Hollan of the Distributed Cognition and HCI Lab at UCSD combines ethnographic observation and controlled experiments to support theoretically informed design of digital artifacts and collaborative workspaces beyond today's graphical user interface and desktop metaphor. Projects include augmented cars for observation (using cameras developed by Lahlou's goup), analyzing gestures in scientific discussions, and developing third-generation multiscale software for spatial tools to manage personal digital information collections.
